Brussels, 26/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - British sports betting company Stanleybet has lodged a complaint with the European Commission against Italy, alleging, once again, breach of EU law. Stanleybet says in a press release that the Court of Justice of the EU, in the Gambelli and Placanica cases, had already noted that a number of Italian provisions were illegal, including the tenders for delivery of operators' licences. The most recent ruling, delivered in February in the Costa-Cifone case called on the Italian authorities to rectify the discriminatory exclusion of operators in this tendering procedure. Stanleybet was the company most affected by this exclusion, the press release continues. Despite this succession of rulings, Stanleybet goes onto say, the Italian authorities have yet to make the necessary changes. The procedure in a call for tenders, from March of this year, for the granting of licences to almost 2,000 new outlets across the country, was on the same lines as that which the Court of Justice said was illegal, the UK group says. Stanleybet has asked the Italian authorities to comply with the Court rulings and to put a stop to the discrimination. “We hope the Italian authorities will listen to us and will retract this call for tenders”, said Director General David Purves, “otherwise we have every confidence the European Commission will take the appropriate action against Italy”.
