Brussels, 26/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) condemned, on Wednesday 25 July, the EU's ambiguous attitude towards Israel. Underlining that the Foreign Affairs Council condemned, on 14 May, Israeli activity in the occupied Palestinian territories which undermines the two-State solution, the EMHRN expresses astonishment that the EU proposed, on 24 July, 60 new activities for cooperation with the Hebrew State (see EUROPE 10662). “If the EU is serious about a just peace in Israel and Palestine, it needs to make a stronger link between its relations with Israel and Israel's respect for human rights and International Humanitarian Law, as called for by the July 5th European Parliament Resolution. The EU needs to back up words with actions. It should use its trade relations and technical cooperation as leverage to that end”, said EMHRN President Michel Tubiana. The Network regrets, inter alia, that the new activities are not made conditional upon Israeli progress in human rights. (CG/transl.jl)
