Brussels, 24/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European action plan aimed at allowing Ankara to obtain a visa liberalisation regime for Turkish nationals sometime hence is now in the process of being drafted and should be ready by the end of the summer, Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said in Nicosia on Monday 23 July. With the finalised action plan in hand, the commissioner may then go to Ankara and officially sign the readmission agreement negotiated by the EU as a counterpart measure. At the end of June, the Danish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers had managed to reach a compromise in Council, allowing Ankara to be given guarantees in exchange for its cooperation on the repatriation of Turkish or non-Turkish migrants that have arrived in Europe through Turkey. The EU27 had adopted conclusions opening the road to visa-related dialogue long requested by Ankara. Turkey had then initialled the readmission agreement in Brussels but has not yet put its final signature to it. The action plan being prepared by the Commission is to set out a series of reforms to be implemented by Turkey if it wants to receive the visa-free regime. This could take some time as the visa-free regime is not foreseen until 2015. (SP/transl.jl)
