Funds for unemployed workers in Denmark and Spain

Brussels, 13/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 12 July the European Parliament budgets committee approved aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) for workers who have lost their jobs in Denmark and Spain. Denmark requested EGF aid in October 2011 to finance the training of 550 workers made redundant from the Odense Steel shipyard. The unemployed workers want to move into other sectors (energy technology, landscaping and robotics). The EGF aid amounts to €6.4 million and the municipalities of Odense and Kertermide will contribute an additional amount of up to €3.4 million. The European shipbuilders have for decades been losing market share with competition from the East in a global market which suffered a 20% recession between 2008-2009. Spain called for EGF aid in December 2011 to help 320 workers, made redundant by small-sized construction companies in the region of Aragon, to find new jobs. The EGF aid comes to €1.3 million and the region of Aragon will finance an additional amount of €700,000. The Parliament will vote on this aid in September. (LC/transl.fl)
