Brussels, 07/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - Former European Parliament (EP) president Pat Cox and former Polish president Aleksander Kwasniewski will monitor judicial proceedings relating to former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko on behalf of the European Parliament, announced current EP President Martin Schulz on Wednesday 6 June. “I hope their mission will be a breakthrough that will help Ukraine to address problems concerning the rule of law and the independence of judiciary. I hope it will contribute to restoring mutual confidence in EU-Ukraine relations”, said Schulz, noting that the two men are personalities of high international repute who command respect for their “excellent record” in foreign and domestic politics and who enjoy wide support across all political forces in the European Parliament.
Cox and Kwasniewski will have full access to all documents relevant to the case as well as to lawyers, prosecutors and other officials involved. They are due to meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on 11 June and are expected to have discussions with Tymoshenko's family and lawyers. (CG/transl.rt)
