Brussels, 10/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - With its adoption of the report by Cecilia Wikström (ALDE, Sweden) on the defence of the immunity and privileges of Corneliu Vadim Tudor (non-attached, Romania), the European Parliament (EP) decided on Thursday 10 May not to not to support Tudor's request for his immunity to be upheld in connection with proceedings being heard by Romania's High Court of Cassation.
Tudor is accused of threatening a bailiff and a number of police officers, committing acts of violence against them, insulting them and generally attempting to obstruct the execution of a legal decision in the context of the eviction of the Romania Mare party from its premises in Bucharest on 4 January 2011. He has been charged with contempt of court, behaviour contrary to good morals and breach of the peace.
MEPs took the view that the circumstances surrounding this event “do not have a direct, obvious connection with Mr Tudor's performance of his duties as a Member of the European Parliament” and decided, consequently, not to back his immunity. The decision means that the legal proceedings can continue. (LC/transl.rt)
