Brussels, 10/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 May EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström tweeted congratulations to American President Barack Obama for his public support for gay marriage - the first US president to do so. The commissioner welcomed his strong leadership and said that same-sex marriages should be possible in the EU too, but this rests in the hands of the member states. Six EU member states currently authorise gay marriages, including Spain, Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands. Eleven allow same-sex civil marriages. The new French president, François Hollande, has promised to make same-sex marriages legal in France before the summer of 2013. (SP/transl.fl)
