Progress on protecting human rights defenders

Brussels, 10/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 7 May, the EU delegation in Mexico hailed the unanimous approval of the law for the protection of human rights defenders and journalists by the Senate and House of Deputies of Mexico, and its process of inclusive development. “This is not only an essential step towards strengthening the rule of law in Mexico but also a recognition of the extraordinary work of human rights defenders and journalists in the country”, the delegation said. The EU also underlined its “great satisfaction” for the approval of the general law for attention to victims and the federalisation of crimes against freedom of expression and journalists.

Further to the assassination of several journalists, the delegation trusts that these new legal instruments will contribute to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the crimes. It underlined that the EU is “confident that competent authorities will do everything necessary to protect those who risk their lives in the defence of freedom of expression and human rights” and that the EU will support the Mexican government's efforts to implement the law for the protection of human rights defenders and journalists.
