Delegation visits USA to discuss gender equality

Brussels, 30/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - A delegation from the European Parliament will be in Washington and New York on 1-4 April to discuss the promotion of women's rights at US and global level. The delegation headed by Mikael Gustafsson (ECR, Sweden), who chairs the parliamentary committee on women's rights, will meet Margot Wallström, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and World Bank experts. MEPs will also liaise with US experts specialised in women's issues from the State, Justice and Employment Departments and meet representatives of civil society, like trade unions or the Council of Women World Leaders. The main topics to be covered by Licia Ronzulli (EPP, Italy), Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou (EPP, Greece) and Siiri Oviir (ALDE, Estonia), who make up the delegation, will be the promotion and protection of women's rights, equal opportunities, removal of all forms of discrimination based on sex, and gender mainstreaming.
