Kallas takes time for reflection on super lorries

Brussels, 30/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - In answer to questions put to him on Thursday 29 March on his true intentions for the cross-border use of gigaliners (super-sized lorries), Siim Kallas, the European transport commissioner, was compelled to clarify to the press the vague outcome of his discussion with MEPs on Monday 26 March. “I do not intend to propose a change of directive (Ed: on weights and measures of HGVs), but member states are sufficiently grown up to decide for themselves what must be done. Our philosophy is that member states must decide whether gigaliners can use their roads”, he said. He wishes to have time to think about the matter further to two legal opinions obtained on the issue, and further to discussions with the parliamentary committee on transport (TRAN). “We shall reflect on how we can take all these comments into account, on the basis of the two legal opinions, and I have promised the TRAN committee that it will be kept informed of our decisions and reflection”, Kallas said, even going on to point out that he was ready to “draft a letter setting out all these legal aspects”. It is likely that the commissioner will not take a definitive stance on the subject until after the Easter break. (MD/transl.jl)
