Crohn's disease, increasing access to care

Brussels, 16/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 15 February, the European Federation of Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis Associations (EFCCA) presented the results of a pan-European study to shed light on the consequences of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) on the day-to-day lives of sufferers. The conclusions show that although care is generally adequate and diagnosis accurate, 18% of patients have to wait for several years for an accurate diagnosis. This situation causes a great deal of stress and is a source of danger, as 68% of these undiagnosed conditions can require emergency care. “The main findings of the survey show that the impact of IBD in our lives is still immense and at an unacceptable level”, said EFCCA President of, Marco Greco. The federation is calling on the health sector to provide a wider range of treatment, better protocols and less discrimination against sufferers of these diseases. (IL/transl.fl)
