Brussels, 14/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 14 December 2011, EU justice ministers agreed on the draft directive on victims' rights in the EU, largely along the lines of the agreement reached in October 2011 at the justice ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.
The Council of Ministers has agreed that aid to victims will depend on their role in proceedings or their direct involvement. The Council wants to restrict the public spending impact of the proposal and under the directive victims will be given the right to information, translation, interpreters and possibly reimbursement of travel expenses.
The ministers agreed on the need for different treatment for more vulnerable victims - children for example, who may receive all aid that is available. The EP will now discuss and give its opinion of the draft directive. (SP/transl.fl)
