Brussels, 14/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - At the International Engagement Conference for South Sudan in Washington on 14-15 December, European Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs announced that the agriculture and food security sector in this young state confronted with massive challenges will be the focus for European Commission aid.
“Today, the international community must secure a comprehensive plan to support South Sudan's sustainable development. I visited the country in November to confirm that the European Commission will play its share and will act in sectors where it has a high impact and a real added value”, the commissioner told the donor community.
Of the €200 million pledged by the EU in May to support the sustainable and peaceful creation of the soon-to-be state, which gained its independence on 9 July (see EUROPE No 10386), €80 million will be allocated to improving rural infrastructure, boosting productivity by providing easier access to services and land, support to small-holders and strengthening water management for sustainable use.
The €200 million allocation of May 2011 represents the European Commission's share of the joint programming exercise conducted with EU member states during the course of this year.
The Washington donors' conference will provide the opportunity for the government of South Sudan to present its development vision and to discuss investment opportunities with international partners. (AN/transl.rt)
