Buzek calls for release of journalist Mona Eltahawy

Brussels, 25/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek called, on Thursday 24 November, on Egyptian authorities to release the journalist, Mona Eltahawy, “immediately”. The latter was arrested and beaten by the Egyptian security forces. If proven to be true, this is “deeply shocking and deeply saddens me”, Buzek said, describing such treatment as “unacceptable”.

Buzek said the Supreme Council of the armed forces must abide by the right of the people to express its demands and aspirations. He called for the crackdown against demonstrators - with its brutal response including the use of bullets, tear gas and beating - to cease.

Mona Eltahawy was in Brussels on Wednesday 23 November to attend the high level conference on the role of women in democratic transition. She made an appeal calling for the Egyptian revolution not to be taken over by the military. She also said that she did not feel in danger in Egypt. (CG/transl.jl)
