Brussels, 09/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - MEP Mariya Nedelcheva (EPP, Bulgaria), who is heading up the EU electoral observation mission on the general election in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 28 November (see EUROPE 10488) has called on all the various players in the election process to do all in their power to make the election transparent and peaceful. “Successful elections will help build lasting peace and a democracy and human values”, she said in Kinshasa on 7 November after meeting governors, those responsible for the dismemberment of the CENI (Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante/Independent National Electoral Commission), non-governmental organisations, journalists and representatives of several political parties.
Nedelcheva travelled to Kananga, Mbuji Mayi and Lubumbashi between 3 and 5 November, accompanied by three experts from the mission team and observers positioned in all the various regions to form a better idea of how the electoral process was progressing in the provinces of Eastern and Western Kasai and Katanga. She welcomed cooperation of the political parties under the guidance of the MONUSCO (United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in some regions and said it would be good to further roll out this type of discussion forum which could help reduce tensions between political parties.
