Brussels, 17/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, on Friday 14 October, strongly condemned the attack on a UNAMID (African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur) night patrol on 10 October in Zam Zam Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in North Darfur that resulted in the deaths of three UNAMID personnel and left six others seriously injured. Ashton is “saddened by this tragic loss of life and expresses her condolences to the families of the victims”, says a statement by her spokesman. The high representative calls on the government of Sudan to conduct a full investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. “There must be an end to impunity for all those who attack peacekeepers”, she adds, calling on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission. The exact circumstances of the attack on the UNAMID patrol remain unclear. Since 2007, when the mission was put in place, 33 UN troops have been killed in attacks of this kind. (LC/transl.rt)
