Poland wants to join euro, but not yet

Brussels, 14/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - Poland wants to join the eurozone, but only when it has met the Maastricht criteria, said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Friday 14 October as he emerged from a Visegrad Group meeting in Prague. He said that the country was determined to join the euro, but only when the Maastricht criteria were properly met in full, which is not yet the case. He commented that one of the reasons for the current crisis was the irresponsible bending of the rules by some member states, which had failed to properly respect the Maastricht criteria. He said the eurozone would become a safe currency area when aspiring countries like Poland and, more importantly, current members of the single currency, properly met all the criteria. The Polish prime minister hoped to see a day when all Europe is in the single currency. (JK/transl.fl)
