Brussels, 14/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council of Ministers finally decided on Friday 14 October 2011 that the Tripartite Social Summit will be held in Brussels on Monday 17 October 2011, attended by the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and representatives of the last, current and future presidencies of the EU, namely Polish Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak, Danish Employment Minister Inger Stojberg and Cypriot Labour Minister Sotiroula Charalambous, who will join the social partners to discuss how to enhance trust and social dialogue to sustain recovery and structural change. The summit was thrown into doubt by the change in the date of the European Council so no agenda has been sent out and the practical details are still to be resolved. The participants will be invited to exchange views on the subject with speaking time limited to three minutes per speaker. The press conference initially planned for after the summit has been cancelled. No reasons have been given - perhaps a desire to not overshadow the debate at the European Council on Sunday 23 October with embarrassing social issues amidst the economic crisis. (JK/transl.fl)
