Brussels, 14/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 19 October, the Commission is to present its new financing instruments for a better connection of transport, communication and energy networks in the EU. Transport wins the day with over half of the budget allocated to it. This will partly be used to finance review of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), maps of which will be presented the same day. With a budget of €50bn for the 2014-2020 planning period, the “Connecting Europe” package of measures will aim to make networks more homogenous, completing sectors left abandoned by member states. The Commission suggests allocating €50bn for better interconnection of EU infrastructure. Energy and ICT sectors will receive €9.1bn each with transport taking €31.6bn, €10bn of which comes from the Cohesion Fund. This is a major budget for transport which will also allow recasting of TEN-T to be financed. The transport commissioner will unveil the maps the same day. At the presentation of the Commission's new legislative and political proposals, President José Manuel Barroso will also unveil the system for compulsory loans for the funding of projects.
