Brussels, 29/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - Corinne Lepage (ALDE, France) has called on the European Commission to take urgent measures to protect vulnerable members of the public against the health dangers of Biphenol A (BPA). Her request comes further to the publication, on 27 September, of two reports by the Agence française de sécurité sanitaire (ANSES), which highlight the impact of the chemical has on health - proven on animals and suspected in humans, even at low exposure levels (problems of female fertility, cardiovascular problems and diabetes). In a written question put to the Commission on 29 September, Lepage asks: 1) whether the Commission plans to ask EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) to take another look at the effect of BPA and to review its position concerning the acceptable daily dosage; 2) whether, under the precautionary principle, the Commission plans to rapidly suggest measures concerning the most vulnerable people (infants, young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women), for example, with specific labelling on food packages to highlight the existence of BPA; and 3) whether, pending labelling and possible substitutes for BPA, the Commission plans to encourage member states to launch information campaigns. Experts believe there are three categories of possible adverse effects on human health. (AN/transl.jl)
