Brussels, 30/08/2011 (Agence Europe) - In its progress report for the second quarter of 2011, the independent consortium EURid, appointed to operate the .eu domain name, highlights the success of longer term registrations. Of all registrations in the second three-month period of this year, 12.3% were for more than one year. Since 7 April 2011, it has been possible to register .eu domain names for up to 10 years. 7 April is also the date of .eu's fifth birthday. “It is one of our duties as the .eu registry to continually add value to the services we offer registrars. Extending the length of time .eu domain names can be registered for is one such service and I am encouraged by how well .eu multiyear registrations were received during the second quarter”, said Marc Van Wesemael, EURid's General Manager. Some 3.35 million .eu domain names had been registered by 30 June 2011. The year from the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011 saw a 4.2% increase in registrations. Germany remains at the top of the list of countries with the most .eu domain names, with more than one million registrations. However, it is in Bulgaria, Estonia and Romania that .eu registrations have grown fastest, with increases of 41%, 40% and 26% respectively. (I.L./transl.rt)
