Brussels, 27/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The security of the European Parliament (EP) will no longer be provided by the company responsible for Israeli prisons. That, at least, is the promised outcome of an international campaign by NGOs and pressure from MEPs which has led G4S, a Danish-British company and the world's largest security firm, to pledge not to renew its contracts in the West Bank. A few months ago, a report by “Who Profits?”, an Israeli NGO, revealed that the company which handles security at the EP is the one which is responsible for the check points, settlements and Israeli prisons in the West Bank. On 25 March, MEPs from various political groups and of different nationalities sent a letter to EP President Jerzy Buzek asking him to urge G4S to give up its illegal activities or face having its contract with the EP torn up. Buzek opened a procedure, at the end of which the company would seem to have chosen the Parliament, despite the legal opinion of Copenhagen law professor Hjalte Rasmussen, who says that the company's activities comply with international law. The MEPs have pledged to ensure that no company working for the European Parliament is involved in the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories. (G.Ba/Gp/transl.rt)
