Brussels, 27/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Following the extraordinary summit of the eurozone, the British Liberal MEP Sharon Bowles pleaded for the European Parliament and the European Commission to be involved in the forthcoming discussions on strengthening economic governance in the eurozone, in a letter to the president of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, Olli Rehn. “I would like to make a public appeal for a full involvement of the Commission and the Parliament in the future work towards improved working methods and enhanced crisis management. While I do appreciate that at times, an intergovernmental approach is the only tool in emergency situations, institutional schemes are built through the Community method and should be the first choice wherever possible”, said the president of the committee on economic and monetary affairs of the EP. The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, who is keen to make the sovereign debt crisis into an opportunity, announced Franco-German proposals for the end of the summer to strengthen economic governance in the Eurozone (EUROPE 10427).
