Brussels, 05/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 5 July, the European Parliament approved a highly critical resolution on the revised Hungarian constitution, which was presented by the S&D, GUE/NGL, Greens/EFA and ALDE groups. The resolution calls on the Hungarian authorities to deal with the questions and problems raised by the Venice committee and to implement its recommendations, either by modifying the new constitution, or by using the future cardinal or ordinary laws. The European Parliament calls on the Commission to carry out an in-depth examination and analysis of the new Hungarian constitution and cardinal laws which will be adopted in the future, in order to verify that they comply with the Community acquis and, in particular, with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, as well as with the letter and spirit of the Treaties. The EP calls upon its competent committees to follow this dossier, working together with the Venice committee and the Council of Europe, and to check whether the recommendations have been implemented and how.
