Brussels, 05/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - According to the executive director of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), the Polish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers is expected to consider road safety and the reduction of societal costs resulting from road deaths as a way to help the EU economy regain its full competitiveness. The ETSC therefore calls on the Polish Presidency to improve road safety within the Union. It states that the cross-border enforcement directive (road offences), that the European Parliament is to endorse on Wednesday 6 July, would already have a considerable impact on road safety.
It is expected that the Polish Presidency will be actively involved in work on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and the funding of major priority projects with the Commission. On this subject, the ETSC points out that only projects complying with the directives on tunnel and infrastructure safety should be funded, as announced in the road safety guidelines presented by the Commission in 2010.
