Brussels, 23/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle held a meeting with Nikola Gruevski, the prime minister of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), in Brussels on 23 June. On that occasion, Füle underlined that the positive Commission recommendation given in 2010 in favour of opening accession talks with that country was “still in force”. However, he went on to say: “For it (Ed: Commission's positive recommendation) to continue to be valid, the country needs to continue making progress on the necessary reforms”. Füle explained what reforms were essential: - effective implementation of the reform of public administration and of the judiciary, the fight against corruption, and ensuring freedom of expression of the media. The next Commission progress report is due in October. On the eternal dispute between FYROM and Greece over the use of the name “Macedonia” (Ed: a dispute that prevents opening FYROM's membership talks due to the Greek veto in the European Council), Füle called on both parties to “be engaged” in finding a solution “either under the auspices of the UN, or through direct talks”.
