Young Federalists want European list

Brussels, 23/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - European youth organisations are to meet in Brussels on Monday 27 June at an initiative by the Young European Federalists (JEF), to support the creation of an EU-wide electoral constituency during the next European Parliament elections in 2014. They will defend the principle that European citizens should be able to vote on EU-wide lists. Andrew Duff, the rapporteur for electoral reform at the institutional affairs committee of the European Parliament, will be at the press conference for the European youth organisations. The report presented by Duff and recently approved by the committee provides, inter alia, for there to be 25 MEPs elected on a transnational list in 2014. Philippe Adriaenssens, President of the Young European Federalists, believes that the “Duff report on electoral reform is a unique chance to raise the popular legitimacy of the European Parliament. (…) The introduction of transnational lists will turn the existing EU parties into real campaigning organisations.” (G.Ba/Gp/transl.jl)
