Debate on UfM feasibility

Brussels, 23/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Euromed senior officials met in Brussels on Wednesday 22 June for their monthly stock-taking of work carried out. On that occasion, they officially introduced the new Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) secretary general, Youssef Amrani, who will take up his duties on 1st July this year. The meeting opened with a general debate on the political context in which the UfM is unfolding. Opinions agree that their discussion shows that questions regarding the nature of the UfM and the mandate of the general secretariat have not yet been answered. Also, within the Arab group, internal consultation organised the previous day highlighted the issue of responsibility sharing. Morocco, which inherits the secretariat general, also holds a similar post at the Anna Lindh Cultural Foundation and the co-presidency of ARLEM (Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly). These countries will also have to agree on a country to take over from Egypt as co-president of the UfM. Jordan has been mentioned with this in mind. (F.B./transl.jl)
