Publication of media literacy report

Brussels, 23/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Audiovisual Observatory (Council of Europe) has announced that the end of 2011 will see the publication of an EU report on media literacy levels. The study will examine European behaviour patterns in the face of the constantly changing digital environment and how citizens cope with new technologies. The study will also identify the legal structures framing development of these new technologies and what measures have been taken to actively promote media literacy so that all citizens have access to technological development. The first article focuses on media literacy amongst several target groups such as children, the elderly or disadvantaged groups, in an effort to make good the digital divide. The second article in the study looks at the standardising approaches at a European level, which can help promote media literacy. This is followed by another study highlighting the necessity of taking into account the national and cultural characteristics of each country as part of a coherent European wide framework on media literacy.
