Stimulating youth employment

Brussels, 20/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 19 May, the EU Council of Ministers adopted a resolution on the structural dialogue with young people on youth employment, which evaluates and draws lessons from the past 18 month period and sets out policy priorities for the next trio of Presidencies. Hungarian Social Affairs, Family and Youth Minister Miklós Soltész said the Hungarian Presidency wanted young people to be able to join the labour market and be ready to join it as soon as possible. The Hungarian Presidency has listed several priorities identified by participants over the past 18 months for encouraging youth employment: (1) recognising non-formal learning; (2) ensuring young people can find long-term, fairly paid jobs with safe working conditions; (3) ensuring a smooth transition from school or college to work; (4) a labour market that is open to young people; (5) providing young people with income support, pension schemes, childcare, housing, transport and the like to help them gain autonomy and a stable life; (6) re-designing financial aid and the effectiveness of education systems; (7) encouraging entrepreneurship among all young people across the board and making it easier to set up a company; (8) better information about and support programmes for entrepreneurship; (9) removing discrimination against young people in employment and working conditions; and (10) protecting young people from precarious contracts.
