Commission suggests re-introducing visas in Schengen area for countries abusing system

Brussels, 20/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 24 May, the European Commission will suggest re-introducing visa requirements to punish countries tending to abuse visa-free travel in the Schengen area by encouraging minorities and people they consider undesirable to leave and go to the EU. The measure covers Serbia and Macedonia, both of which are asked to introduce measures to dissuade people from their countries to seek asylum in the EU. Belgium is particularly concerned about the high number of asylum-seekers arriving from Serbia and Macedonia, most of whom are Roma or Albanians from southern Serbia. Due to inertia of the Serb authorities, EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström has decided to take action herself and introduce a penalty demanded by the vast majority of member states. The idea will come as no surprise to Serbia, because it was mentioned in a European Commission report published on 4 May this year. The proposal will be examined by the JHA Council on 9-10 June. On 24 May, the Commission will publish a report on dialogue on migration, mobility and security with southern Mediterranean countries. (L.C./transl.fl)
