Rostowski says Poland unlikely to join euro until 2019

Brussels, 19/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Leaving the ECOFIN Council in Brussels on Tuesday 17 May, Polish Finance Minister Jan Vincent Rostowski said he didn't think Poland would join the euro until 2019, because the Polish constitution would have to be changed. He added that he didn't think Mario Draghi would be welcoming Poland into the eurozone (Draghi, the current governor of the Bank of Ireland, is expected to take over from Jean-Claude Trichet at the helm of the European Central Bank in November for an eight-year term of office, see EUROPE 10380). In the past, Rostowski has commented that he thought Poland could join in 2014, but this was probably over-optimistic, considering 2015 as a realistic date, along with 2016. The current Polish constitution states that Poland's central bank has to manage the country's monetary policy and that the z³oty is the national currency. (M.B./transl.fl)
