Consultation between Belgrade and Pristina makes progress

Brussels, 19/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - The mood at the fourth direct consultation meeting between Serbia and Kosovo under the auspices of the EU, in Brussels on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 May, was “constructive”. Agreement was “close” on a number of technical dossiers, according to a press release published by the EU after the talks. Discussion between Borko Stefanovic of Serbia, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry, and Kosovar Deputy Prime Minister Edita Tahiri was this time on questions pertaining to the civil registry, cadastre records, energy, the free movement of persons, telecommunications and aviation. The next debates, scheduled for mid-June, will above all relate to missing persons, cultural heritage and the recognition of school and university diplomas.

Commission against division of Kosovo. In the meantime, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said on 18 May that division of Kosovo was the only realistic solution. Speaking on Radio B92, Dacid said a compromise would consist of establishing a line of demarcation between the territories where Serbs live and those where Albanians live. In Pristina, the Kosovar government immediately rejected the idea of division described by Dacic. The status of Kosovo does not come within the direct consultations between Serbs and Kosovars under the auspices of the EU. The European Commission also categorically rejects any change of border in the Balkans, said the spokesperson for Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle on 19 May. “Partition is not on the agenda”, she stressed.
