Brussels, 19/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 19 May, the Culture Council adopted conclusions on the contribution of culture to the realisation of the EUROPE 2020 strategy. These conclusions look what culture brings in terms of the objectives for smart, inclusive and sustainable growth. Smart growth: cultural and creative industries can contribute to providing the workforce with a wide range of skills that can be used in a number of different areas. Sustainable growth: digitisation of cultural heritage and contemporary creative content, and ensuring that they are available online, for example, through the Europeana digital library, have an important role to play. Inclusive growth: greater participation in cultural activities and projects can enhance the feeling of belonging to a community despite linguistic, ethnic or social differences. The Council calls on member states to make use of EU financial instruments, especially the structural funds, for cultural projects and on the Commission to build culture into future EU political and financial instruments.
