11/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament president calls for the world ice hockey championship in Belarus to be suspended. In a letter to the International Ice Hockey Federation, European Parliament (EP) President Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland) called, on Wednesday 11 May, for the suspension of the championships which are scheduled to be held in Belarus in 2014. Buzek says that “the behaviour of the Belarusian regime clearly disqualifies it from the privilege of holding a major sporting event, such as the 2014 World Ice Hockey Championships”. Organising this event would be tantamount to an “international reward or legitimacy” conferred on the Belarusian authorities, says the EP president. Along with other members of the EP, Buzek calls on the Federation to reconsider its decision and not to organise the event in Belarus. (A.By./transl.rt)
