Open Door Day on 7 May

Brussels, 29/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Saturday 7 May will be Open Day for the European Community, with European institutions opening their doors to the public in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. The Open Day marks the anniversary of the declaration on 9 May 1950 by Robert Schuman, this year also being the 25th anniversary of the European flag as the banner of the European Union.

In Brussels, on Saturday 7 May, visitors may walk from Rond Point Schuman to Place du Luxembourg, strong along over 100 stalls, stoop at information stands and enter discussion. They may also taste European regional products, take part in a quiz and sing at a giant karaoke. Subjects in the news will form part of the event with the following key themes: economic recovery, innovation in energy and volunteering. Within the Council of Ministers (Justus Lipsius building), the Hungarian presidency will present folk dancing and culinary specialities.

In Strasbourg, on Sunday 8 May, there will be numerous information stands at the European Parliament building and, in the chamber, a debate will take place between MEPs on the European Year of Volunteering and an exhibition called “Figure de l'Europe” will be opened. The winner of Parliament's 2010 Lux Prize,”Die Fremde”, will be shown.

In Luxembourg, on Saturday 7 May, stands will be set up Place Clairefontaine, with public debates, concerts and dancing - and an enormous cake. (L.C./transl.jl)
