Brussels, 29/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Who will pay for the ageing population? Should ageing workers make way for young people? Should the retirement age be increase? Innovative solutions will be required to support active ageing if one is to avoid conflicts arising between generations and ensure that the European social models are viable in the long-term and fair for all generations. The Third European Day of Solidarity was the occasion of discussions about this in Brussels on Friday 29 April 2011. Next year will be the European Year of Active Ageing, which was launched on Friday. Some 450 stakeholders from across the EU met in Brussels for the event, including representatives of national and local public authorities, private companies, civil society organisations and academia.
The day also provided an opportunity to launch a website for the Active Ageing Year (http: //europa.eu/active-ageing-2012) and unveil a brochure published by a coalition headed by AGE Platform Europe to provide the public with information about promoting active aging and autonomous ageing in employment and in the community. The brochure is available in French and English from AGE Platform Europe in Brussels (info@age-platform.eu). (G. B./transl.fl)
