EU condemns “hideous” attack in Marrakech

Brussels, 29/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - José Manuel Barroso and Catherine Ashton have strongly condemned the attack in Marrakech which left at least 16 dead and many injured (including several European tourists) on Thursday 28 April. “We strongly condemn this hideous terrorist act that killed and injured innocent people from different countries (…). The European Union stands with the people of Morocco at this difficult time. Marrakech will surely continue to be a symbol of multiculturalism and a crossroad of cultures. The perpetrators of this attack have shown no respect for human life and dignity and should be brought to justice”, the president of the Commission and the EU high representative for foreign affairs state in a press release on 29 April.

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, also, condemned the attack in Marrakech, deploring the fact that a “place of tolerance” had been “turned into a place of violence and despair”.

Rachida Dati, MEP (EPP, France), presented her condolences to the families of the victims, saying that the attack was all the more deplorable as it came at a “period of profound change in Morocco”. (H.B./transl.jl)
