Experts to oversee private military companies

Brussels, 28/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Better regulation of private military firms at European level - that was the suggestion made by a panel of experts chaired by Natalino Ronzitti and Francesco Francioni, which met for the last time in Brussels on Thursday 28 April after three and a half years of research within the framework of the Priv-War Consortium. Conclusions reached by the specialists will now come under the scrutiny of the European institutions. The consortium was created at an initiative by the European Commission with the participation of seven European universities to develop avenues of reflection relating to the ever increasing use of mercenaries and private military companies, oversight of which varies from state to state. According to Ronzitti, recommendations established by the Priv-War Consortium must above all open debate and then result in a process of controlled oversight managed by the European institutions. Christine Bakker, who is a researcher at the European Law Academy, notes that this process is already underway, as can be seen by the great interest aroused by the consortium's work within the European External Action Service and at the European Parliament.
