Brussels, 28/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Greens/EFA rails, in a press release, against the lack of concern shown by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) at the side effects of Pandemrix, an anti-H1N1 vaccine developed by GSK. Finnish, Swedish and French studies have found that people under the age of 20 can experience narcolepsy after being vaccinated with Pandemrix. In the light of this information, the EMA proposed to that the information on the patient information leaflet should be updated. For Michèle Rivasi, a member of the Parliament's environment, health and consumer protection committee, this is “quite clearly not enough”. “The EMA makes no comment on the fact that both the Finnish and Swedish authorities have decided provisionally to suspend Pandemrix injections on under 20-year-olds”, says the French MEP, a biologist and specialist in public health matters within the Europe Ecology Greens. She says that this is “a deliberate attempt to minimise the risks”. The reasons for playing down the risks of the vaccine are many and Rivasi calls for light to be shed on this issue. (I.L./transl.rt)
