Independence of judiciary is priority

Brussels, 21/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) has called on Egyptians - both public authorities and civil society - to make the independence of the judiciary a priority at the present time. The EU-backed network, which brings together all the European and southern rim human rights organisations, draws this recommendation from the conclusions of a report which it commissioned on the weaknesses of the Egyptian legal system. An independent judiciary is the main guarantee of justice, a key objective of the Egyptian revolution, the report states, delivering an overview of the Egyptian judicial system and listing the obstacles to the independence of the judiciary, such as interference by the executive in judicial affairs through appointments to high office; the lack of monitoring and assignment of tasks; failure to carry out judicial decisions; the negation by some parties of the right to appear before their natural court through recourse of special tribunals; deprivation of a wide section of society of the opportunity to become a judge and concentration of powers.
