Brussels, 30/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - Commissioners Stefan Füle (Neighbourhood Policy) and Cecilia Malmström (Home Affairs) will be in Tunis this Thursday, 31 March, for talks with the Tunisian government on how the EU can support the democratic and economic transformation which is taking place in Tunisia. The matter of Libyan refugees fleeing the fighting in their country and other migration-related issues will also be discussed. “I am coming to talk business and how we can concretely support Tunisia”, Füle said on Wednesday 30 March, before his departure. Following the revolution and the overthrow of the former regime, Tunisia now needs to undertake “ambitious reforms” in areas such as justice, tackling corruption and organised crime, and the development of the poorest parts of the country. “The EU is ready to support Tunisia on each of these fronts”, the commissioner added. Malmström will explore possibilities with the Tunisian authorities for enhancing people-to-people contacts between the EU and Tunisia and better management of the migratory flows. The EU will, of course, abide by its responsibility to provide international protection (asylum) “to those who need it, but we also need to ensure that those who are not in need of such protection and who are not allowed to stay in the EU are returned in safety and with dignity in accordance with EU regulations ands international law”, Malmström stated before leaving for Tunis.
