Major role for cable industry

Brussels, 30/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The objectives of the digital strategy for ultra-high-speed broadband internet coverage will be achieved thanks to the cable industry, according to a survey published by Cable Europe, the members' association for the main operators of high-speed cable television and their national associations across Europe. According to the study, which has been presented to Commissioner Neelie Kroes, who is in charge of the digital strategy, the cable industry currently covers 50% of the needs of European households, with connections of speeds between 10 and 100 (and more) megabits per second. In 2013, 51% of households will have a collection of at least 30 Mbps at prices lower than those offered by the incumbent operators and by 2020, 51 million European households will be linked to an ultra-high-speed network of 100Mbps or more, Cable Europe predicts. “The numbers show cable's stimulating effect on the market. Where you see cable, you see more innovation and competition from the incumbents too”, says Manuel Kohnstamm, the president of Cable Europe. (I.L./transl.fl)
