22/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - Buzek calls for end to violence, Greens want to stop aid to Gaddafi. The President of the European Parliament has called on the Libyan authorities to cease all violent repression of opponents and protesters and spoken out against the loss of human life. In a press release published on Monday 21 February, whilst the Foreign Ministers of the 27 were discussing Libya in Brussels, Jerzy Buzek voiced his solidarity with those who “regardless of the price, are fighting for their fundamental freedoms”. The Greens/EFA group of the European Parliament has called on the EU to “put an end to aid to the regime” of Colonel Gaddafi: the rapporteur of the Parliament on the stability instrument, Franziska Brantner, said that aid “can easily be used by the regime to repress its population”. The leader of the ALDE group at the EP, Guy Verhofstadt, believes that “the end is nigh for Gaddafi”. (Gp/transl.fl)
