Brussels, 22/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 22 February, national experts on the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health approved the proposal from the Commission to allow slight traces of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) for which a request for authorisation has been submitted in the EU in imported animal feeds. The threshold is 0.1% and does not apply to produce for human consumption, a decision regretted by the European oils and oilcake industry and by supplier countries. Nineteen countries voted for the measure (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom) seven against (Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Slovenia) with Luxembourg abstaining. Member states now have three months to approve or reject the experts' decision. (Gp/transl.rt)
