Rehn says it is for the Greeks to decide about privatisation

Brussels, 15/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU Financial and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn calmed troubled waters in the spat between Greece and its foreign backers over the scale of privatisation in the Greek economic adjustment programme. Leaving the Eurogroup meeting on Monday 14 February, Rehn said it went without saying that Greece was the only institution responsible for taking decisions on its privatisation programme, its timing, scope and priorities. The Greek government says the attitude of the European Commission, the ECB and the IMF in their recent fact-finding mission to Greece to monitor implementation of the Greek austerity programme was “unacceptable”. The fact-finding mission had announced an intensification of the Greek privatisation programme from raising some €7bn in three years to €50bn in four years. It also endorsed the efforts made by Greece, paving the way for the payment of €15bn in aid. (M.B./transl.fl)
