15/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - Cohn Bendit in favour of ratings agency for democracies. “It's quite bizarre, the way the capitals have suddenly woken up and discovered that Mubarak was a dictator.", the President of the Greens, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, told the press on Tuesday, calling on the Parliament and the Commission to examine the idea of former MEP Michel Rocard of a scoreboard in which the governments of the world are judged depending on their respect for human rights and the rule of law. “I propose we create a ratings agency for democracies. On the basis of this, there would be a hierarchy governing commercial relations with the EU”, explained the German MEP, who stressed the importance of an instrument of this kind for ensuring transparency. The instrument was dismissed as “Mr Cohn-Bendit's latest gadget” by the President of the EPP, Joseph Daul. (E.H./trans.fl)
