Buzek backs democratisation of North Africa

Brussels, 14/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - The events which have turned the political scene on its head on the southern shore of the Mediterranean over recent weeks also affect the people of Europe and European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, opening the sitting, was warmly applauded by a well-filled chamber as he expressed his admiration at the courage of those people in the countries of North Africa who are ready to become involved in the democratisation process and his sorrow for the victims. He called on leaders to engage in dialogue with their citizens, to lift the state of siege and to re-establish freedom of expression. The fears raised in 1989 by the changes in Central and Eastern Europe had not been confirmed by the facts, Buzek said, going on: “Let us not be afraid to help our neighbours achieve their hopes of democracy”. He noted that, at the present time, a huge number of people were arriving from North Africa in several EU countries: these countries will have to be helped to absorb this flow, he said. The difficult situation being experienced on the island of Lampedusa was raised by Mario Mauro (EPP, Italy), who wanted the matter to be put on the agenda. Following a call from S&D Group leader Martin Schulz during the debate, the European Commission will be asked to provide information on the means that could be used to come to the assistance not only of Italy, but also of other member states. The debate will take place this Tuesday afternoon. (L.G./transl.rt)
