Brussels, 07/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - The representatives of the international Quartet on the Middle East - Catherine Ashton for the European Union, Hillary Clinton (USA), Sergei Lavrov (Russia) and Ban ki-Moon (UN) - have called for the events in Egypt and the wider Arab world not to be allowed to derail the Israel-Palestinian peace process. Meeting in Munich on Saturday 5 February, the Quartet called on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides to “overcome current obstacles” in the peace process and to reach a peace agreement by September 2011. “Negotiations should lead to an outcome that ends the occupation that began in 1967 and resolves all permanent status issues in order to achieve a two-state solution”, the Quartet says in its statement on 5 February. The aim must be conclusion of the negotiations “by September 2011”, the statement says. A further meeting has been scheduled for mid-March. Before then, “(Quartet) envoys will meet separately with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Brussels, as well as with representatives of the Arab Peace Initiative Committee”, it was agreed. The Quartet regrets that Israel has ended its 10-month moratorium on settlement building and repeats its position that “unilateral actions by either party cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations and will not be recognised by the international community”.
