07/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - EIB welcomes official opening of Namibia's only cement plant. The European Investment Bank (EIB) last week welcomed the inauguration of the Ohorongo facility, the most modern cement plant in Africa, in the north of Namibia. The plant's output of 700,000 tonnes per year will meet the country's demand for cement, replacing relatively costly imports. The remainder of production will be sold in the south of Angola, Botswana and Zambia, countries which, with their relatively poor infrastructure, will be able to supply their demand more efficiently in Namibia. The EIB cofinanced the project, the total cost of which was some €250 million, to the tune of €82 million. In a press release, the EIB says that the plant will comply with the same strict environmental and emission control standards as used by sister facilities in Germany. (O.L./transl.rt)
